full of nothing
I inadvertently topped off the half empty jar of all purpose flour with the half full bag of self-rising flour leaving me with a substance that was good for nothing. Finn and I took the jar out to the deck and threw handfuls into the woods, watching the dusty clouds of flour drift in the breeze and settle on the dry brown leaves.

Sometimes the old magic is strongest. Last night, the girls turned their jim jams* inside out and slept with spoons under their pillows. This primitive appeal to the snow spirits was heard, and this morning, Fulton county schools have canceled classes for the day giving the girls their second ever no-school-snow-day. Not only that, but the ice cream factory has canceled all meetings and made office hours optional today, so I will be working from home.
*We had some British next door neighbors for a while when Finn and Fallie were younger, and a few of their expressions stuck. Jim jams can also refer to the D.T.’s, so it also has that going for it. Also, most of the kids in our neighborhood still refer to bicycle training wheels as “stabilizers.”

In our house, calling someone a “delicate flower” attributes to them the most witheringly frail degree of contemptible wimpiness, but I have to admit* my excessive sensitivity to these stupid time changes. If I were to assemble a list of optimistic responses to the imminent end of civilization as we know it, I would have to put the demise of daylight savings time near the top of the list.
*I can admit it here in this forum but never to those blond demons that I live with. One hint of weakness and they will surely attack.

I read some on the deck, but mostly I listen as Fallie tells stories to Gopher Guts about her day at school and the events, real and imagined, that filled it.
time to clear the deck
It is covered with fallen leaves. Also, Floyd and I had fun reading Infinite Jest and The Broom of the System together so we are going to read Ulysses together this Fall.

Finn and Fallie are watching a squirrel lick all of the salt off of the peanut shell before cracks it open. We also saw a tufted titmouse grab a peanut and fly to a nearby branch, but he dropped it before he could get it open.

By treaty, I am granted a period of twenty minutes to digest between the end of the evening meal and the beginning of the nightly bout of greco-roman kaiju brazilian couch fighting. Tonight, I suggested to my opponents that we retire to the deck and read during this interval and my proposal was unanimously approved.
