floyd has never had a coke float
She thinks coke floats sound gross. I told her that she sounds gross. The end.
Bright and early tomorrow morning, we are heading north to the Smoky Mountains. Every day we are there we will go swimming in cool, clean mountain streams, and every night we will walk into the dark middle of an abandoned town and sit surrounded by thousands upon thousands of synchronized fireflies. I look forward to this trip all year. Have a fun weekend, wherever you are.
Elkmont, Tennessee.
Elkmont is a region situated in the upper Little River Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains of Sevier County, in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Throughout its history, the valley has been home to a pioneer Appalachian community, a logging town, and a resort community. Today, Elkmont is home to a large campground, ranger station, and historic district maintained by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Little River Lumber Company established the town of Elkmont in 1908 as a base for its logging operations in the upper Little River and Jakes Creek areas. By 1910, the company began selling plots of land to hunting and fishing enthusiasts from Knoxville, who established the “Appalachian Club” just south of the logging town. In 1912, a resort hotel, the Wonderland Park Hotel, was constructed on a hill overlooking Elkmont. A group of Knoxville businessmen purchased the Wonderland in 1919 and established the “Wonderland Club.” Over the next two decades, the Appalachian Club and Wonderland Club evolved into elite vacation areas where East Tennessee’s wealthy could gather and socialize.
Upon the creation of the national park in the 1930s, most of Elkmont’s cottage owners were given lifetime leases. These were converted to 20-year leases in 1952, and renewed in 1972. The National Park Service refused to renew the leases in 1992, and under the park’s general management plan, the hotel and cottages were to be removed. In 1994, however, the Wonderland Hotel and several dozen of the Elkmont cottages were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Elkmont Historic District, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, sparking a 15-year debate over the fate of the historic structures. In 2009, the National Park Service announced plans to restore the Appalachian Clubhouse and 18 cottages and outbuildings in the Appalachian Club area (which were older and more historically significant) and remove all other structures, including the Wonderland Annex (the main hotel had collapsed in 2005).
Elkmont is thus now a preserved abandoned area. While some of the originals buildings were demolished, there is still an old cemetery, summer cabins, an old brigde, many deserted homes and some rests of the Wonderland Park Hotel.

the previous five undocumented movie night movies in reverse chronological order
- Blade - long pseudoscientific discussions of biological models of vampirism. Fallie had to have an explanation for each and every one of the daywalker’s weapons. Finn bury-her-face-in-my-chest cried when Whistler died.
- Sneakers - We were going to watch To Kill a Mockingbird*, but someone mentioned this movie and we changed plans. Whistler owned this movie. Hey, two movies in a row with a character named “Whistler,” I didn’t put that together before. When he was driving the step-van (blind) through the parking lot, we were all losing it.
- Stand by Me - A big hit. Also, LEECHES. Also, “Sick Balls Chopper!” Hilarious.
- My Life as a Dog - Fallie thought Ingemar’s inability to drink milk in the presence of others was great. Both of them thought that Ingemar’s story about his absentee father loading bananas on boats in South America was unlikely and hilarious. Even very serious discussions about transoceanic shipping and the movement of food did not reduce the humor. Honestly, this movie comes up every time either one of them eats a banana and it has been more than a month. Finn cried quietly when Ingemar found out his dog was dead.
- Little Miss Sunshine - This was much more fun to watch with the girls than it was the first time I saw it. The slapstick humor tickled them and once they were going, we laughed through the whole movie. It has suicide attempts, snorting heroin, a lot of cursing, a dead grandpa, gas station pornography purchases, and strange underage striptease routine, but if you can get past that, it is definitely a great movie for kids.
*To Kill a Mockingbird is a perennial movie night runner up. I am not sure why it always gets displaced.

8 Reasons to Start Loving Your Body Today, by Shape Magazine
(via yosamanthrax:until:cadyheron:morewineplease:showmeasmile:jesssica)
- Because it is unique; no one else has the same one.
- Because it is capable of extraordinary feats, enabling you to run, climb, jump, lift, squat, snuggle, and spoon.
- Because no matter how badly you treat it, it is willing to give you another chance.
- Because it is expressive, telling you how it feels and broadcasting to others how you feel about it.
- Because confidence is pretty sexy.
- Because your daughter must learn to love hers.
- Because somebody (or many somebodies!) admires, covets, and adores it.
- Because you will regret not loving it more later.
9. Because having a body is the only present vehicle for existence and the dark endless void of nonexistence is nauseatingly terrifying.
That line totally blindsided me. I have been laughing at it all week.
Pleasedontsqueezetheshaman is a fun read, and without her, I may have eventually entered the dark endless void of nonexistence never having seen Walt Whitman’s junk (leaves of ass, that one still kills me.) Thank you Miasma Protege, I am forever in your debt.

Wild World - Steven Demetre Georgiou / Steve Adams / Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam / Yusuf
Our library has decided to catalog works authored by Cat Stevens under any and all of the above names. In several instances, their choices are anachronistic and seem arbitrary, as Tea for Tillerman, for example, was released before Yusuf Islam (Islam, Yusuf) existed as an identity for this particular artist. Through persistence and cross referenced searches, Floyd retrieved a couple of his albums through the holds system and we have listened to them off and on over the past couple of weeks.
I have never been a huge fan of Cat Stevens; his music is nice, I don’t dislike it, but its strongest impact on me has been in its role as a soundtrack for Harold and Maude. Most of the songs still don’t inspire strong feelings in me, but Wild World always caught my attention when it played. I am not sure if he is singing to a daughter, a girlfriend, or just a loved one, but the song captures a mood of confidence and concern that I feel when I see my daughters stretching their legs and stepping out into the world independently. I want to warn them but not scare them. Encourage but not mislead them. Mostly, I just hope they are going to be okay.
